• In 2011, he faced a lot of criticism when he stated that the loss to the exchequer incurred was zero in the 2G spectrum scam. He later had to clarify his statement.
• On 27 December 2011, as the Minister of Information Technology, he proposed that he wanted to regulate and monitor all content on the internet, especially Facebook, Twitter, Google, and others. He was heavily criticized throughout the country for this proposal. Students put out protests and some hackers even hacked his website and posted memes on it.
• In 2017, it was revealed that his 2nd wife, Promila Sibal, partially owned and managed a slaughterhouse; one of the biggest in the country. The Jains protested against the slaughterhouse as it was named Arihant; which means eternal bliss in the Jain community. The name was changed to Ashriya. It was soon revealed that Sibal hid his wife's profession in the affidavit he submitted to the Election Commission for the 2014 General Elections.
